A Franciscan nun has been named the 2024 St. Teresa of Calcutta Awardee for her almost three decades service to the Indigenous Agta community in the northern Philippine province of Cagayan Sr. Minerva Caampued.

Sr Minerva Caampued – An honor within
Conceived in memory of Mother Teresa, the Saint Francis Award was founded in 1983 by the AY Foundation, the corporate foundation arm of the Yuchengco Group of Companies; and Manila Jaycees recognizes ordinary men and women who perform extraordinary acts that are consistent with her tradition of service.
The ceremony, which was held on October 4, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Month, also honoured Sr. Minerva.

Sr. Minerva was cited by the awarding organizations for her many and wide-ranging activities which were described as bringing dignity and quality of life to the Agta, according to a report published in CBCP News.

The very special programs include children education, environmental conservation, general public healthcare and feeding initiatives.
Sr Minerva expressed her gratitude in a message sent to LiCAS News, offering the recognition to the Agta people. She would say, “I am not to be a success but to be faithful.
I dedicate it to the Agta communities for life. who until today continue to grapple with the daily and ever coming challenges of defending their ancestral land. defending their rights and preserving their vibrant cultural heritage among profound marginalization and ignorence.
“the constant inspiration of their strength and resilience. “Of course, this is not an award just for me but also inspired by that spirit my sisters showed.
Sr. Minerva highlighed the ever coming difficulties faced by locals in the Philippines. especially security of ancestral lands from outside attackers.

Who so special this owner is for Sr Minerva Caampued?
That recognition so special during Indigenous Peoples Month, she said. Inspired by the example of Mildred Norman Ryder, the Peace Pilgrim — a former resident of Pomona who knew Fr. Solanus and trekked 25,000 miles on foot to remind people to live in peace, walking at least 10 miles a day before she was murdered for her principles — as well as by her beloved patroness St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) and St. Francis of Assisi, Mother Fouch kept up reflections on supporting marginalized persons such as indigenous people and recommitment to service to those in distress.
Named in memory of the internationally respected humanitarian Sr Teresa of Calcutta, an awardee Peace Priced Laureate 1979 -The Presentation seeks to celebrate those who embrace a life of service and care.
