This year’s theme, inspired by “Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls” — the official theme of International Day of the Girl 2016 — is fitting as it conveys both the need for urgent action and persistent hope, driven by girls who are leading us towards a better future. In many African societies, the plight of the girl child has been improved much and today she is more loved, respected, educated and bequeathed with all types of opportunities than ever before. And yet millions of African girls still live under constant threat and abuse, subject to discriminatory cultural and religious beliefs that severely limit their potential with few dreams realized in a single lifetime only because they are born girls.
Church reaffirming the dignity of the Girl Child
The Church in Africa collaborates with many local and international organizations and groups, working tirelessly to sensitize the girl child, through sensitization programs (education programe) and skill acquisition programs on how to protect themselves against harassment. An example of such is the Nigerian Conference of Women Religious (NCWR). Adolescent Girls Initiative of Nigeria (AGIN) collects was created over a nationwide Nigerian network of religious sisters, called pastoral activities and worked suhsequently which promotes the dignity of girl child with its different activities and projects.
Girls’ vision for the future
The world we live in today is a brutal and cold place with wars, poverty, every day more intense climate crisis makes the world no less than hell. Every kid wants to live a place where there is enough of love and where every kid, especially the girl child feels secure.
She forsee a possible future where she can fulfill her skills and potential and give back to the social good. As the world observes the Girl Child Day, let society remember that “With girls, we not only have half of our peacemakers — a critical mass to achieve sustainable peace; we also gain women who know how to tackle conflict” (United Nations).
