Cardinal Parolin Meets with Middle East Nuncios, Calls Lebanon’s New President Between Expectations and Reactions in Middle East

On January 13, 2025, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, presided over a landmark meeting in Amman, Jordan. It was attended by Apostolic Nuncios of Middle Eastern countries. In the discussions, a vociferous call was made for a ceasefire “on every front” along with a vision for sustainable peace in the Middle East.

The meeting came as Cardinal Parolin was visiting to consecrate the Church of the Baptism of Jesus, situated along the Jordan River.

Attendees From All Over the Middle East

The meeting was attended by representatives of Bahrain, Egypt, the UAE, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Syria, Yemen. So they addressed urgent matters ranging from regional crises, political and ecclesial challenges and humanitarian issues.

Envisioning a Peaceful Middle East

The Vatican said it hoped the Middle East would be a land of peace. The Holy See’s words directed to the Christians as a direction in support of talks between religions.

Discussion with President of Lebanon

Cardinal Parolin also spoke on the phone with Lebanon’s newly-elected President, Joseph Aoun, inaugurated on January 9. Cardinal Parolin offered his congratulations to President Aoun and assured him of his prayers in the course of the call. He noted as a positive for Lebanon’s future the prompt naming of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.

Such great meetings and communication showcase popes effort to spread peace, and hope in the Middle East.
