Pope advancing women, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia – Pope News

L'approccio graduale del cardinale Fernandez

Holy See: Pope advancing women, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia.

Reflecting the Holy See’s continued commitment to advancing women, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia underscores that a society must continue to combat harmful stereotypes that keep women and girls from having the same opportunities — while also acknowledging that it is precisely these differences that enable women to offer something unique.

Pope advancing women – Introduction

Speaking at a Session on the Advancement of Women, and focusing around the theme: “the elimination of harmful practices and all forms of violence against women,” the Holy See’s Permanent Observer at UN in New York, said that for a society to be just, it must necessarily promote ways of life wherein women are able also to grow to their full potential.

The remarks by Archbishop Gabriele Caccia came on Wednesday during the occasion of the Third Committee of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Pope advancing women – No to violence

Domestic violence was, in his words, “a poisonous weed that plagues our society and must be pulled up from its roots,” according to a statement quoting Pope Francis; the Archbishop appealed for joint action against domestic violence which often remains behind closed doors.

But Solving the root causes is the key to world female progress.

The same sentiment was echoed by the Archbishop who said tackling poverty and unavailability of good education would go a long way to reduce the abuse of women and girls, trafficking for sex exploitation as well as eliminate all forms of inhuman and degrading treatment directed at women including those typified with various abuses, violence, coercion or drug addition.

Respecting women’s special capabilities is essential to making progress in gender equality, “We can never have equal prospects for the determination of our future, separation of individual preferences, and full human equality if we fail to advance women without considering their differences,” he said.

He added:

“We need a reinvestment if we are to stop maternal mortality and make clinics across the country, especially in poor women areas comply with essential basic facilities and infrastructures.

“Unless we ameliorate matters relating to poverty, domestic battery and inequality — it would be a disingenuous statement that the womenfolk are being promoted or progressed in the manner,”

Pope advancing women – Surrogacy and education

Archbishop Caccia said that surrogate motherhood is one of the gravest expressions of such exploitation as it leads to “the unacceptable commercialization of women’s unique capacity for motherhood.” He argued that this practice offends against the dignity both of women and of children, and he insisted on surrogacy in all contexts should be prohibited and banned.

Summarising his remarks, his holiness Archbishop Caccia highlighted and insisted that learning is a key for empowering women, so that they too can unleash their giftedness in building the common good.

“Attitudinal change is essential, however it has to be backed with concrete action on the part of women and men in family and society,” he said.
