Los Angeles Fire Victims’ Fund
“Near to the inhabitants of Los Angeles County, California, sorely tried by terrible fires in these past days: I pray for all of you,” added the pope.
That came after a message he sent Saturday to Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles. In the message, he said he was deeply saddened over the destruction of life and property caused by the fires.
Rising Death Toll
The wildfires of Los Angeles have killed 16 people, according to reports on Sunday. The “Palisades Fire” was linked to five deaths and the “Eaton Fire” was linked to 11 deaths. The authorities fear the numbers may increase as search efforts continue in affected neighborhoods
Evacuation warnings have many residents anxious while crews try to keep the flames from reaching key landmarks like the J. Paul Getty Museum and the University of California.
A Call for Global Peace
In the context of Holy Family Sunday, Pope Francis after baptizing several babies Sunday morning, also reflected on the significance of praying for peace. He also marked the beatification of Don Giovanni Merlini, a missionary priest, noted for being a peacemaker and a man of counsel.
“Let us pray for peace in Ukraine, the Middle East and the whole world” the Pope said, stressing that war is always a defeat.
He ended with a passionate plea:
“Let us not tire of praying for peace. Let us remember that war is always a defeat.”
